The Family Resource Center food shelf was opened in May of 2005 and has since become the largest food shelf in Dakota County serving those in need in the south metro. In 2006, the food shelf gave food to nearly 4,000 people. In 2007, that number will be closer to 11,000. Like all programs at the Resource Center, the food shelf is entirely volunteer run. Nearly 200 volunteers assist with food drives, pickup food, sort and put away donations, pack food orders for clients, distribute food, coordinate food collections and long range planning. Food shelf volunteers and donors come from many area churches, schools, civic organizations, sports teams, clubs, and individuals. Volunteering at the food shelf is a great opportunity for families with older children (grades 7 and up), individuals and couples to make a direct, hands-on difference in their community. Volunteers are needed for many positions and activities and donating food is always a great way to help those in need. For more information on volunteering at the Resource Center, check out our Volunteer page and more information on conducting food drives can be found on our Food Drives page. Volunteering at the food shelf will change your life.
